Officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), the Department of Health (DOH), the Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE), and Gift of Life Donor Program are highlighting the importance of organ donation during National Donate Life Month. PennDOT Deputy Secretary Kara Templeton emphasized that individuals can register as organ donors any time, not just when renewing a driver’s license or ID card. Currently, 48.5% of Pennsylvanians with a driver’s license or ID are registered as organ donors. Over 6,000 Pennsylvanians are awaiting organ transplants.
To register, individuals can visit the Organ and Tissue Donation page on the PennDOT website. Adding the organ donor designation is free, and registrants will receive a designation card to carry until their next license renewal.
Pennsylvanians are encouraged to donate $3 to the Governor Robert P. Casey Memorial Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Trust Fund when applying for or renewing a driver’s license, ID, or vehicle registration. This fund supports organ donation education and promotion.
